Location: Austrian Alps

Note to myself: Never plan a sunrise mission on the longest day of the year—unless you genuinely enjoy a 1 a.m. wake-up call and questioning your life choices in the dark. But if you do have such a questionable idea, be sure to bring a Bialetti coffee maker. Always.
Early alpine starts like this are part chaos, part sleep depravation, part obsession with good light and a big part convincing your partner, that this is a good idea.
The upside of having no sleep: you often end up alone. While most people are still asleep, you’re standing somewhere high above the valley, watching the first light hit the mountain side, with no noise except wind and an occasional yawning.
And since you brought the Bialetti, there is coffee. Not hotel coffee, not espresso bar coffee—but badly brewed, slightly over-boiled Bialetti coffee that somehow tastes better than any other high-end barrista stuff. And you can enjoy it in blissful solitude because no one else is dumb enough to get up that eraly.
