Some alarms are worth setting—and a summer sunrise hike in the mountains is definitely one of them. This shoot for the Deuter Speed Lite backpack started in that strange hour where everything feels slightly unreal: sleepy eyes, cool alpine air, and a sky that hasn’t decided on a color yet. The kind of early morning in the Alps where you question your life choices—until the first light hits.

The plan sounded simple enough: follow a hiking route to a good vantage point and catch the sunrise over the ridgeline. What we didn’t realize (or chose to ignore) was that our “trail” in the Austrian Alps was actually a ski route instead of a hiking path. Which, turns out, is a very different experience when there’s no snow involved.

By the time we reached the summit viewpoint, a bit later (and a bit more humbled) than planned, the sunrise over the mountains was already doing its thingy with soft golden light and that quiet moment you only get during an early morning hike in the Alps.

Throughout the ascent, the Deuter Speed Lite hiking backpack stayed exactly where it should: close to the body, lightweight, stable, and without constant adjustments—ideal for fast hiking and moving through technical terrain.

And then, the real reward: descending to a small alpine hut in Austria for coffee and Kaspressknödel. A slightly unusual combination, maybe—but after a sunrise hike like this, it works perfectly.
